(Host) Commentator Willem Lange has been hanging out in a West Coast cafe reading the want ads in a local paper, and is very glad to be back home again.
(Lange) I walk a lot through the woods of this neighborhood, and am often amazed at the desperate energy it must have taken for the settlers of this region to farm these bony hills. I’m also struck by the fact that there aren’t too many trees in the woods very much older than I. Wasn’t too long ago these forests were open fields, freshly abandoned by farmers and shepherds seeking, literally, greener pastures.
They went west, seeking the Grail. And I don’t think they’ve found it yet. I was in a cafe in Olympia, Washington, recently, reading the newspaper ads. Here’s one of ’em:
Sept. 2 – The Reality of UFO’s, by Deanna Emerson; Sept. 8 – Feminine Wisdom with the Medicine Wheel, Dawn Singfeather Davies; Sept. 15 – Behavior Therapy (a non-violent approach to solving your dog’s problem at home), by Martha LaBagh, Animal Behavior Therapist.
When I was a kid, I wanted to go west. I got my chance in 1958. A friend and I piled everything into a 1946 Plymouth and headed for the Northwest, climbing mountains all the way.
It was a bust. Six weeks later, lying in a tent high in the Wind River Range of Wyoming, I wrote in my journal, “I wonder what’s going on back in the world.” It bothered me that, when I was waking up, the world was two hours ahead of me, and had already happened.

What a relief it was to get home! Where you recognize the trees, and tell tomorrow’s weather by the feel of the air. If your home is in New England, you live among people who stayed put, who felt that if there was something important still to discover, it was to be found right here.

The New Times, it’s called; a great paper. No news at all; just features, interviews, and ads. Hundreds of ads – for acupuncturists, rolfing, “sacred sexuality,” shamanic healers, palmists, counselors, vedic and Jungian astrologers, “an honest mechanic,” yogis, and “creative lawyering from the heart with a lawyer who cares.”
Here’s my favorite: Are you a landowner with 25 or more acres who would be willing to allow 100,000 or more people to trample your grass for the sake of calling a spaceship to land? If so please give me a call. Pete Corliss.
I’m not touching that one with a ten-foot pole. But I am going to save this paper to show Mother during the worst days of next March when she reminds me the grass is greener and the tulips are blooming out in Never-Never Land.
This is Willem Lange up in Etna, New Hampshire, and I gotta get back to work.
